The teaser photos are out, but it's official! We bought a family farm! That's right. 50 gorgeous acres of pasture and ponds in Autauga County, Alabama.
It's been a dream for my family to have a family compound. We've looked at places for years. We've bought lots on the river and in the woods and we've sold them when things just didn't fit where we were in life at the moment. So, this has been a long time coming, but it's finally here!
And if you've been around the Brandon story for very long, you know the constant tension between my city life loving self (give me all the local restaurants and concerts and local theatre) and my desire to get back to a simpler life where we grow our own food and live off the land and play in the dirt...
Well, it's time to see if this Enneagram 7's love for adventure can go all in to this new family farm called Double Spring Farms! First of all, the land is breathtakingly beautiful. It's green, ya'll! Pastures of flat land that's already cleared and ready for all the animals! Ponds! No wait, one pond and one lake! (I've decided that a pond is something you can fish around without having to get in a boat. Make sense right?)
I'm excited to join my mom and dad, my sister and brother-in-law, and my 3 Gooses on this adventure as we turn this beautiful property into our homestead. With a focus on regenerative farming, we all are taking on different "roles" at the farm and I'm really excited about it!
My sister, the horse whisperer, will also be our sheep hearder. My mom and dad are our gardeners. I'm the test kitchen chef and I'll be in charge of the orchard. The gooses are still fighting over who's taking care of the chickens and pigs... But how much fun is this?!? You noticed I left my brother-in-law out... that's because I'm pretty sure he's going to be the one that's fixing all of our messes, which will be a full time job! He truly is the best!
I hope you'll join us on this little journey, if nothing else for all the laughs as we try our hand at getting back to our roots, back into the dirt, and hopefully create a place that will be a legacy for our family to continue.
Next time, we will talk houses and I'll get to tell you how I'm reviving the dream of "Kay Libète", my "Freedom House" that's been a long time coming and is finally on the way!
