Where: Roosters Bar and Grill
Location: Rocky Hill - West Knoxville
Wings: Traditional (Bone In)
Flavor: “Hot”
Brandon gives it 2 stars!
Since becoming a halftime Knoxvillian, Roosters has been one of my favorite go-to spots for a quick bite! The problem is, I got hooked on the best thing on their menu: the pizza.
But every time I am there, I see people ordering wings… sometimes by the table full!
So I knew they had to be good!
I am trying to stick to simple flavors that everyone has so that I can make fair comparisons. I ordered the traditional, bone-in wings flavored hot. I figured this would be a very traditional flavor profile with a buttery red buffalo sauce. But Rooster’s “Hot” flavor is a very thin sauce that did not stick to the wings, but puddled in the bottom of the basket. It DID have really good flavor and I ended up getting more of that flavor by dipping my fried okra in it than the wings. (Side note, the fried okra is perfectly crispy, seasoned well, and a great side dish option!)
The wings were on the pale side and the presentation will not wow you, but don’t judge a book by it’s cover, right? The skin was crispier than it looked, which I really like. But without the sauce sticking to the wings, you can definitely get that “previously frozen” taste that chicken has way too often.
So, for the game day atmosphere, for the delicious wood-fire oven pizza, for the fried okra, and for the cold beer, we give Roosters a 5 star review and it’s still our favorite neighborhood bar and grill… but for the wings, well, we are gonna stick with the pizza!
